The wholesale markets of Lisbon, Coimbra, Braga, Évora and Faro, aware of the need to change eating habits in Portugal, have been encouraging a program for young people called “5-a day”. The program 5 to the Day promote the daily consumption of at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables as a way to promote a healthy diet and contribute to the prevention of various diseases associated with poor eating habits.
The program 5 a Day was created to respond to the growing need of conscious civic education of children, having been formatted programs for two target groups: the 1st cycle (children from 6 to 9 years) and 2nd cycle (children from 10 to 12 years ). The objective of this program is inform the children and young people, various types of fruit and vegetables and raising awareness of the need for a change in consumption habits in order to promote healthy eating and combat obesity.
For this objective, the 5 a Day Program involves various activities, which in a playful manner and with adapted contents for each age group, sensitize all participants to the importance of adopting healthy eating habits, especially through daily consumption of at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, such as making a fruit salad.
More recently, and aware of the social importance and impact of the promotion of healthy eating habits of elder people who may undergo changes, particularly with the correct contribution of horticultural fruit, a format aimed at the elderly population has also been implemented, expanding the target audience of the Program, reinforcing its relevance at the national level.
Thus, the Program 5 a Day aims to:
- Promote the daily consumption of at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables;
- Promote a healthy diet;
- Prevent various chronic diseases associated with poor eating habits.
Its target groups are:
– the age group of children and adolescents (6 to 12 years old);
– parents, teachers and the school community;
– older population;
– ultimately, civil society in general.
Since its creation, more than 65 000 children have been reached in the actions of Program 5 a day.
